Zigbee is a low-power, wireless mesh protocol used in millions of smart-home devices worldwide. It enables reliable, local device-to-device communication without depending on Wi-Fi or the cloud — and it's the protocol behind most of the affordable smart sensors, switches, and bulbs you'll see in Australia.
A brief history
Zigbee was introduced in the early 2000s, based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The goal: simple, low-power wireless connectivity for short-range communication — perfect for sensors, lights, and switches.
Hundreds of companies adopted Zigbee, eventually forming the Zigbee Alliance, now called the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) — the same body that runs the Matter standard.
Key benefits of Zigbee
- 🔋 Low power consumption — battery-powered sensors run for years.
- 🔁 Mesh networking — every powered device extends and strengthens the network.
- 🌐 Local control — no internet required for device-to-device communication.
- 🔌 Interoperability — many devices from different brands work together (when certified).
How Zigbee compares to Wi-Fi
| Zigbee | Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|
| Power use | Very low (battery devices for years) | High (rarely battery-powered) |
| Range | Short per hop, but mesh extends it | One hop to AP |
| Devices per network | Hundreds | Limited by router |
| Local control | Native | Most devices need cloud |
| Setup | Pair to coordinator | Wi-Fi credentials |
| Cost | Generally cheaper devices | Generally more expensive |
For sensors, switches, and lights, Zigbee usually wins. For cameras and high-bandwidth devices, Wi-Fi (or wired) is the right choice.
Popular Zigbee devices in Australia
| Brand | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Philips Hue | Smart lighting | Premium, Matter-compatible via Hue bridge |
| Aqara | Sensors, switches, locks | Affordable, broad range |
| Sonoff | Switch retrofits | Excellent value, large catalogue |
| IKEA TRÅDFRI | Bulbs, plugs, remotes | Budget-friendly, sold at IKEA AU |
| Mercator Ikuü | Australian smart switches | Local brand, good warranty |
| Akubela | Panels + integrated sensors | Hub bridges Zigbee + Matter + Thread |
How to use Zigbee with Home Assistant
Home Assistant supports Zigbee through two integrations:
- ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) — built-in, simpler to set up.
- Zigbee2MQTT — more flexible, larger device support, popular with power users.
You'll need a Zigbee coordinator (a USB stick or panel that runs the Zigbee network):
- 🟢 Sonoff Zigbee Dongle Plus — affordable, widely used
- 🔵 ConBee II / III USB stick — premium, robust
- 🟠 Home Assistant SkyConnect / Yellow — multi-protocol (Zigbee + Thread)
- 🟣 Akubela hub — handles Zigbee + Thread + Matter natively
Once configured, Zigbee devices are fast, responsive, and reliable — ideal for critical automations like lights, sensors, and locks.
Should you bias new purchases toward Zigbee in 2026?
Mixed answer.
- For sensors and switches: Yes — Zigbee is mature, cheap, and reliable.
- For lighting: Either Zigbee (Hue, Aqara) or Matter (Nanoleaf, newer Hue) — both work.
- For new ecosystems: Bias toward Matter-over-Thread where available (see our Matter & Thread guide).
- Existing Zigbee setup: Don't rip it out. It works, it'll keep working, and Matter bridges to Zigbee on every major hub.
